July 11, 2022 - LaBrie talks 30th anniversary of I&W and shares story about Moore

Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie recently reflected on the band's 1992 breakthrough album Images and Words – and in the process shared a story involving the band's original keyboardist Kevin Moore. LaBrie discussed the band's sophomore record with Peter Orullian, who is the host of a hard rock and heavy metal interview show titled Breaking Absolutes, in celebration of its 30th anniversary. The Images and Words album, which is the band's most commercially successful studio release, was also the first to feature vocals by LaBrie.

In the interview, Orullian asked LaBrie about the closing track, "Learning to Live," and whether the "high F#" halfway through the song was written that way prior to him joining or whether the singer himself added it.

"I was totally written that way," LaBrie said in the interview. "It was funny because the first time I sang that song we recorded a demo, and the first little demo we did was on a 4-track or an 8-track recorder. John Myung had this condo he was sharing with a roommate, and I still remember he had this spare bedroom where I was sleeping a couple nights, and that's where we went in and recorded. We had it all set up. Mike [Portnoy] was recording me... So we get to that part that you're talking about with the F#, and I do it, sang it, and I finish. And all of a sudden, the freaking bedroom door comes swinging open and Kevin Moore came running in going, 'What the fuck! Oh, my God! That's exactly what we were talking about! Holy shit, dude!'"

June 11, 2022 - Moore among the contributors to upcoming book on Fates Warning

Kevin Moore is among those who shared their thoughts on the history of progressive metal pioneers Fates Warning in the upcoming book, "Destination Onward – The Story of Fates Warning." The 400-page book, which was authored by longtime fan Jeff Wagner, was created with the cooperation of "every single member of Fates Warning, past and present, along with those at the record labels who supported them, peer musicians, members of the road crew, and a variety of others with the Fates sphere," according to the book's official website. It will be released on July 15.

"I did interview [Moore] via e-mail; it was probably the shortest interview," Wagner said in a video interview with Heavy Metallurgy. "He's got a whole other career right now. And, of course, my gateway to him was Jim [Matheos]. But he was nice enough to answer some questions. And I worship that guy. OSI and Chroma Key, I'm a huge fan of both of those things."

The book is described as being an "honest appraisal of the many ups and downs through the band's 40-year history" and is complete with 232 images and 53 footnotes, according to its website. It is available for purchase at http://fateswarningbook.com.

April 5, 2022 - Terry Brown says having Moore on FW's APSOG was "special"

Legendary producer Terry Brown recently reflected on his work with Fates Warning on their 1997 masterpiece, A Pleasant Shade of Gray, which this month is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The concept record, which featured guest keyboards by Kevin Moore, was the eighth studio album by the progressive metal pioneers and consisted of one song divided into 12 parts. It is also noted by many fans for its darker and more progressive style.

Brown, who is perhaps best known for his work with the Canadian rock band Rush, was responsible for the mixing, production and recording of A Pleasant Shade of Gray. He had previously worked with Fates Warning on their Parallels album in 1991.

"So where do we begin, and what else can we say?" Brown said in an interview with Sonic Perspectives. "A very dark and brooding album from Jim Matheos that was quite a challenge to make. Recorded at the Carriage House in Connecticut, which was a great residential studio, we put lots of time into this, not least of all with Mark Zonder's complex set up and execution of the kit and samples. We were all very focused on sounds and performance and having Kevin Moore as guest on keyboards was special."

Dream Theater has announced the release of the "Awake Demos (1994)" as part of the band's "Lost Not Forgotten Archives." The album, which peaked at #32 on the Billboard charts, includes a haunting piano ballad that many fans consider to be Moore's signature song, "Space-Dye Vest."

"Remixed, remastered, and available for the first time on vinyl, 'Awake Demos (1994)', showcase one of Dream Theater's most iconic discography entries in its original form," the band's record label Inside Out Music posted on Facebook. "Featuring fan-favorites '6:00,' 'Space-Dye Vest,' 'The Mirror' and more, this original demo recording of Dream Theater's third studio album, a follow-up to the legendary 'Images and Words,' uniquely showcases an inside look at the quintet's unparalleled history. The "Lost Not Forgotten Archives" are a collaboration between Dream Theater and record label Inside Out in which the band's longstanding Ytsejam Records catalog is being reissued alongside some new additions to the collector's series. Ytsejam Records previously played host to the band's official bootleg release collection comprising live shows, demos and studio outtakes from throughout the band's career.

Dream Theater has announced the release a 1993 recording from The Limelight, which was an iconic music venue located in New York City, as part of its "Lost Not Forgotten Archives." The concert, which featured keyboards by Kevin Moore, included a performance of the epic "A Change of Seasons," which was later released on an EP in 1995.

"Next in line from Dream Theater's 'Lost Not Forgotten Archives' series now comes the "LNFA: Live in NYC - 1993" release," the band's record label Inside Out Music posted on Facebook. "A milestone concert in the band's history. From Dream Theater's home state of New York, a homecoming performance at The Limelight, one of NYC's most iconic clubs of the '90s. Including the epic fan-favorite 'A Change of Seasons,' this is one of Dream Theater's earliest live recorded performances. Re-mastered and available for the first time on vinyl (3LP + 2CD)."
